Ring buoys should be mounted on the deck rails where anyone can see them, ideally with a floating line attached. A buoy you can spot from your seat is a buoy the crew can throw in seconds — that is the whole point of it being on display rather than in a locker.
First aid kit
Every one of our boats carries a stocked first aid kit. You will not usually see it on deck, so the test is simpler: ask a crew member where it is. The answer should come instantly, with a pointed finger, not a shrug.
Fire extinguishers
Look for extinguishers near the engine area and the galley or bar, with a service tag and a pressure gauge sitting in the green. An extinguisher with no tag is an ornament, not equipment.

A licensed boat keeps a working radio link with the shore, so the captain and harbour master can reach each other throughout the day. Standard travel advice applies: carry holiday insurance that covers leisure activities. What time will I be picked up from my hotel?
