How mobile signal actually behaves on the water
Turkey's three main networks — Turkcell, Vodafone Turkey and Türk Telekom — cover the coastal strip around Side, Kumkoy, Evrenseki and Colakli well. Hotels, harbours and beaches all sit comfortably inside that footprint, so on the quay before departure your phone works as normal.
The masts, however, point at land. Once a boat pulls away from the coast, bars start dropping, and the further out you go the less reliable data becomes. In practice most of our sea trips stay near the coast in normal conditions, so you are rarely completely dark for long — signal comes and goes rather than vanishing for the day. The Green Canyon catamaran cruise runs on the Oymapinar reservoir in the Taurus foothills — calm freshwater, no waves, and the most seasickness-friendly trip we operate. It is also the one place where you should simply expect your phone to go quiet. The gorge walls rise steeply on both sides, and rock does what rock does: it blocks the line of sight to the nearest mast. Deep in the canyon, signal is patchy to non-existent; it tends to return on the open stretches of the reservoir and once you are back on the road.
In our experience, a few hours without notifications often ends up being the best part of the day. Download your music or podcasts the night before and let the canyon do the rest. Do our boats have guest Wi-Fi? An honest answer
Generally, no. Reliable internet on a moving vessel needs satellite or long-range marine hardware, and on a day-trip boat the honest maths does not support it — you would be paying for a connection that most guests use to upload one photo. So we do not advertise guest Wi-Fi on our excursion boats, and we would rather tell you that plainly than let you find out on board.
If you are booking a private VIP yacht charter — day rates for mid-size groups run roughly €1,200–2,200 per boat — ask us about connectivity when you enquire. Set-ups vary from boat to boat and we will confirm what your specific vessel carries rather than promise something generic.
Roaming and eSIMs for UK and EU visitors
This is where most surprises happen, because Turkey usually sits outside the standard roaming zones people assume they have.
- UK visitors: most UK plans treat Turkey as outside their "Europe" roaming zone. Some networks sell daily add-ons for Turkey; others charge steep pay-as-you-go rates. Check your plan before you fly — a two-minute look at your provider's app can save a nasty bill.
- EU visitors: "roam like at home" covers the EU and EEA only. Turkey is outside both, so your domestic allowance almost certainly does not apply here.
- Travel eSIMs: if your phone supports eSIM, a Turkey or regional data package installed before you fly is usually the cheapest fix. Activate it when you land and keep your home SIM for calls and texts.
- Local SIM cards: Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom all sell tourist SIMs at Antalya Airport and in town. Airport counters are convenient but pricier; shops in Side and Manavgat tend to be cheaper. A holiday-length stay is not affected by Turkey's long-stay phone registration rules.

Why a dry bag matters more than a signal bar
Season after season, we see far more phones killed by water than days ruined by lost signal. Salt spray over the bow, wet hands on the ladder after a swim, a phone left on a bench during the foam party on the Island Boat Tour — salt water is merciless on electronics, and most travel insurance policies are unsympathetic about it.
A simple dry bag or a waterproof neck pouch costs a few euros in any shop in Side and solves the problem completely. A clear waterproof pouch has a second benefit: you can shoot photos and video at the supervised swimming stops without ever exposing the phone. Swimming happens only at supervised stops with boarding ladders on our trips, so there is always a moment to stow your phone properly before you jump in.
Staying reachable and safe without your phone
Your phone is not part of the boat's safety system, and it never has been. Every vessel we operate is a licensed commercial boat with a qualified, licensed captain and crew, marine communications on board, life jackets in adult and child sizes, and first aid kits. At sea, the Turkish coastguard (Sahil Güvenlik) responds on emergency number 158, and the harbour master suspends departures altogether when the weather is not safe. In other words: the people responsible for your safety are connected even when your Instagram is not.
A few practical habits still help. Tell family at home which trip you are on and roughly when you will be back — picked up in the morning, back by late afternoon on the full-day trips. Save your hotel's name and phone number somewhere offline. Download an offline map of the Side area before you travel.
